Hippolytus is a tragedy written by Euripides (c. 484-407 BCE), one of the great Greek playwrights of the early 5th century BCE. As with many tragedies of the era, the central focus of Hippolytus is humanity's relationship with the gods. For Euripides, Hippolytus is an intentional and accordingly annoying celibate, whose chastity offends Aphrodite ("All those that live and see the light of the sun / from Atlas' Pillars to the tide of Pontus / are mine to rule" (ll.3-5)).

When Euripides staged the play, he won the highly sought first prize. Though he is said to have produced some 90 plays, he only won the competition 5 times. A second try. Historians argue that Hippolytus staged another version of the play some years earlier, which the audience hated, before he wrote the version we possess.
Phaedra’s every action is a struggle against Hippolytus’ strong morals and chastity. The story is one of a fight between the two characters, concluding with Hippolytus’ loss of life, an event that leads to Phaedra’s shame and eventually her death. Hippolytus By Euripides First presented in 428 BC I have reread this tragedy shortly after I had read the play of ‘Phaedra’ by Racine. Euripides work is an extremely beautiful reading pleasure and provides a very colorfully painted picture of events. Especially the chorus and coryphe give the reader a feeling of participation. A reading and discussion of Euripides' Hippolytus (translation by Ian Johnston), hosted by Joel Christensen (Brandeis University) with special guest Eirene V Hippolytus is a mortal prince who prefers chastity and hunting to the pursuits under Aphrodite’s purview.
